China Arrests Several Tibetans as Protests Continue Against its Rule

DHARAMSHALA: Chinese security forces on 10 September detained two Tibetan youths and an old Tibetan woman following a peaceful protest against the Chinese government at the main square of Ngaba County.


The identities of the two Tibetan youth could not be verified. The youths staged the protest on the main market square of the township, which was later joined by local Tibetan bystanders. The old woman who was detained is Aye Gumo, a Tibetan woman aged around 68, hailing from Kharsar Yultso village in Ngaba County. Aye Gumo is a daily wager, working as a street cleaner with a family of nine members.

In a separate incident, five monks of Kirti monastery were arrested and severely beaten by Chinese authorities on 11 September. The monks were on their way to their summer retreat center when the incident took place. Four of the monks were released a few days later except for 22-year-old Lobsang Sonam.

The reasons for Lobsang Sonam’s continued detention and place of detention are not known. Lobsang Sonam is the eldest of the four children of parents; Kelsang and Tsering Drolma. His parents are from division no.2 of Kharsar village in Rong area. He joined Kirti monastery as a novice monk at a young age.

In the third such incident, Dorje Dolma, a 29-year-old Tibetan woman was arrested by Chinese authorities following a solo protest on 20 August. She was shouting slogans protesting the repressive policies of the Chinese government. Her present place of detention and physical condition is not available.

Dorje Drolma is the second of four daughters to father Dorje Rabten and mother Tamdrin Tso. She hails from Tendartsang house in division no.2 of Meuruma village and is the mother of three children.

As a result of these protests, the main streets and road junctions in the county are reportedly under strict surveillance by security forces. All internet connections have been cut, except for in Chinese government offices.
