Majority of Americans feel disconnected with major parties: poll

A majority of US voters felt disconnected with major US political parties and were pessimistic about the presidential election, said a new poll on Monday.

Just 8 percent of all Americans considered the Republican Party to be very or extremely responsive to what ordinary voters think, with 62 percent saying the GOP is only slightly or not at all responsive, according to the poll by the Associated Press/NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

The Democratic Party did just slightly better, with 14 percent saying the party is very or extremely responsive. Another 46 percent said that it's only slightly or not at all responsive, said the poll.

The poll came at a time when both parties were scrambling to boost voters' confidence as the chaotic and divisive primary season was about to come to an end.

However, according to the poll, only 15 percent of Americans said they have a great deal of confidence in the Democratic Party, while just 8 percent saying the same of the GOP.

In addition, the poll found that only 13 percent of respondents said they felt proud about the election while 37 percent said they were hopeful.
