Indigenous land rights: Brazil court postpones ruling on controversial bill

--

A three-week protest by Indigenous people in Brazil has ended in frustration as the Supreme Court postponed a ruling determining their rights to claim ancestral lands. But Indigenous leaders say the battle has just begun against a bill that bars the recognition of ancestral lands that were not occupied by 1988, when Brazil’s democratic constitution was approved.

The plan was to unite more than 40 Indigenous peoples to stop Congress from approving a controversial bill, backed by the powerful farm lobby and president Jair Bolsonaro himself.
