China is ready to develop strategic partnership with Belarus after Alexander Lukashenko won the presidential election there, spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Hua Chunying said on Monday.

"We respect the choice of people and hope Belarus will keep the political stability and will continue the economic development," she said. "We are ready for further development of the overwhelming strategic partnership on the basis of mutual respect, equality and interest."

Alexander Lukashenko has reportedly won the presidential election with 83.49% of the vote.

  1. Belarus's presidential election fell short of democratic standards, international monitors said Monday after President Alexander Lukashenko won a fifth term in a vote that was hoped could lead to an easing of relations with the West...

"It is clear that Belarus still has a long way to go towards fulfilling its democratic commitments," said Kent Hasted, head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's observer mission for the Belarusian election.
