Israel’s High Court Rejects Appeal Against Demolition of Palestinian Homes

Israel’s High Court of Justice upheld orders on the demolition of five Palestinian homes at the same time rejecting an appeal against the practice of demolition of homes belonging to Palestinians as a punitive or deterrent measure, The Times of Israel reports.

The Thursday ruling lifted a temporary injunction on the demolition of the homes issued by Justice Uzi Vogelman last month, the newspaper said citing a statement from the panel of judges, headed by court president Miriam Naor.

The buildings to be demolished are the homes of alleged West Bank murderers and Hamas members, The Times of Israel said, adding that original demolition orders for the homes were issued after Israel approved anti-terrorism measures, such as the demolition of homes as a deterrent measure.

Palestinians want to create an independent state on the territories of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, partially occupied by Israel, and the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, and want Israel to withdraw from the Palestinian territories it took after the Six-Day War in 1967.

Israel has long accused Hamas, a Palestinian Islamic political organization and the de facto authority in Gaza, of carrying out bomb and missile attacks in Israel and in the occupied Palestinian territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

The United Nations has raised concerns about the recent increase in Palestinian home destruction by Israel.
