UN says looking forward to continuing work with Britain, EU after Brexit vote

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Friday that the world body looks forward to continuing its work with the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU) after Britain voted to leave the EU in a historic referendum.

"The vote to leave the European Union came at the end of intensive deliberations and rich discussions, not just in the United Kingdom, but across Europe," said Ban in a statement.

Ban said that he trusts in "Europe's well-proven history of pragmatism and common responsibility in the interest of European citizens" as Britain and other EU member states begin the process of "charting a way forward."

"At the U.N., we look forward to continuing our work with the United Kingdom and the European Union -- both important partners," said Ban.

Ban expects the EU to continue to be "a solid partner" on development and humanitarian issues, as well as peace and security, including migration. He also expressed the hope that Britain will continue to exercise its leadership in development and other areas.
