3.4 million German young people couldn't afford vacation

Over 3.4 million German children and teenagers couldn't afford a vacation in 2014, local media quoted the European statistics office Eurostat as saying on Monday.

That made up 23.8 percent of German young people under 18 years old, said the report of German news agency DPA.

Senior official Sabine Zimmermann from Germany's die Linke party said "it becomes more often for children and teenagers to feel what poverty means", and called it "shameful" for Germany as one of the richest countries in the world.

The data also showed that 16.7 million German people could not take a holiday due to lack of money, and 5 percent of the young people were affected by significant material deprivation.
