French govt rules out concessions to Corsica nationalists over autonomy

Corsica
France’s government on Tuesday ruled out any major concessions on Corsican autonomy, after the island’s nationalists won a regional election last Sunday, Reuters reports.
The government in Paris, however, said it was open to talks that took into account the island’s distinctive character.

The nationalists won two thirds of the seats in Corsica’s new regional council.

Unlike Catalonia’s nationalists, they do not call for independence, but seek official status for the Corsican language and a greater say on fiscal issues.
