 The Biden administration intends to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center by the end of President Joe Biden's term in office, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said during a press briefing on Friday.

"That certainly is our goal and intention," Psaki said when asked whether Biden will close the Guantanamo Bay detention center by the end of his term in office.

  1. Such an initiative, however, is unlikely to bring down the curtain anytime soon on the high-security prison located at the Guantanamo Naval Station, due largely to the steep political and legal obstacles that the new administration will face.

    1. Set up to hold suspects following the September 11, 2001 attacks, the offshore jail came to symbolise the excesses of the US “war on terror” because of harsh interrogation methods that critics say amounted to torture.

      “We are undertaking an NSC process to assess the current state of play that the Biden administration has inherited from the previous administration, in line with our broader goal of closing Guantanamo,” National Security Council spokeswoman Emily Horne told Reuters.
